I forbindelse med Århundredets Festival 2025 inviterer Århus Sinfonietta til en sanselig og tankevækkende koncertoplevelse: Note of the Between. Med hardanger violinen som omdrejningspunkt tager vi på en kunstnerisk rejse, der udforsker grænser – både de fysiske, kulturelle og musikalske. Filosof Søren Schauser og violinist Sofie Thorsbro Dan vil gennem samtale og musikalske eksempler introducere hardanger violinens fascinerende historie og udvikling i folkemusikken og klassisk musik. Derefter kan publikum se frem til uropførelsen af Aya Yoshidas værk gjálfr-marr (Wave-Horse), skrevet specielt til Århus Sinfonietta og hardanger violinist Sofie Thorsbro Dan.
Et symbol på grænsebrydning
Grænser findes i mange former. Nogle skiller nationer ad gennem traditioner, etnicitet og historie, mens andre forbinder os gennem fælles fortællinger og oplevelser. Grænser kan også skabe hierarkier og adskille os unødvendigt. Men hvad sker der, når vi bryder disse grænser – eller ser dem på en ny måde?
Hardanger violinen er et symbol på denne udforskning. Den er en del af strygerfamilien, men dens rødder i norsk folkemusik gør den til noget særligt – et instrument, der balancerer mellem tradition og fornyelse.
Denne aften inviterer Århus Sinfonietta publikum på en rejse over kulturelle grænser, hvor hardanger violinen fungerer som et musikalsk kompas. Gennem koncertens program udforsker vi de særlige kendetegn ved forskellige lande – poesien, stemningerne og de mennesker, der giver steder deres unikke sjæl.
Aftenen begynder med en samtale mellem filosof Søren Schauser og violinist Sofie Thorsbro Dan, som belyser hardanger violinens fascinerende historie og udvikling. Sofie Thorsbro Dan vil i den forbindelse opføre musikalske eksempler på hardanger violinen. Publikum får her et indblik i dens rolle i både britisk, centraleuropæisk og nordisk musikkultur. Efterfølgende opføres Aya Yoshidas nye værk gjálfr-marr, hvor den traditionsrige hardanger violin møder moderne kompositionsmusik i en grænsebrydende symbiose.

As part of the Centuries Festival 2025, Aarhus Sinfonietta invites you to an engaging and thought-provoking musical experience: Note of the Between. With the Hardanger fiddle at its core, we embark on an artistic journey that explores boundaries – physical, cultural, and musical. The audience will be treated to the world premiere of Aya Yoshida’s gjálfr-marr (Wave-Horse), specially composed for Aarhus Sinfonietta and violinist Sofie Thorsbro Dan.
A Symbol of Breaking Boundaries
Boundaries come in many forms. Some divide nations through traditions, ethnicity, and history, while others connect us through shared stories and experiences. Boundaries can also create divisions and unnecessary separations. But what happens when we break these boundaries – or look at them in a new light?
The Hardanger fiddle symbolizes this exploration. It belongs to the string family, but its roots in Norwegian folk music give it a unique character – an instrument that bridges tradition and innovation.
On this evening, Aarhus Sinfonietta invites the audience to cross cultural boundaries, with the Hardanger fiddle serving as a musical guide. Through the concert’s program, we will explore the distinctive sounds of different countries – the poetry, the emotions, and the people who give each place its unique soul.
The evening begins with a lecture and talk between philosopher Søren Schauser and violinist Sofie Thorsbro Dan, who will share the fascinating history and development of the Hardanger fiddle along with musical examples. You’ll gain insight into its role in British, Central European, and Nordic music cultures. Following this, Aya Yoshida’s gjálfr-marr will be performed, where the traditional Hardanger fiddle meets contemporary composition in a boundary-breaking fusion.
